The University Information Security Policy requires that devices connected to the UConn network be supported and current with vendor-released patches. Up-to-date software and operating systems (OS) on workstations are essential for secure, robust IT operations. Unpatched workstations are vulnerable to security threats and introduce substantive security risk to the University. Microsoft is formally ending support for Windows 7 on January 15, 2020 and will no longer be releasing security patches for the OS. Any workstations running Window 7 after this date will no longer be compliant with university policy. These devices should either be upgraded to Windows 10, isolated from the reset of the network, or decommissioned. ITS is working closely with campus IT professionals to remediate this problem, but a substantive number of these machines remain unaddressed and in operation. The end-of-support date is now quite near, and we strongly encourage that mitigation be pursued with greater urgency.
