What is NetReg?
NetReg is a system that detects a new device attempting to connect to the University of Connecticut network. The system redirects the new users to a web page that allows them to register, thus gaining network access priveleges. The registration system does a compliance check and, if you pass, simply adds your computers unique network card address and either an email or university NetID to a registration database. This system allows us to verify that new computers are adequately patched, and provides us contact information in the event that there is a problem.
How can you prepare for it before you arrive?
The UConn NetReg systems checks to ensure that your Windows PC has the most recent security patches installed. It does not do a virus scan, or check for any other software. You can insure that you pass the scan by downloading and installing all Microsoft patches prior to your arrival on campus. NetReg does not check for the presence of Service Pack 2 for XP, but it does check that the most current security patches are installed. How do you register once you arrive?
1- Plug your computer into the network
2- Browse to any website
3- You will be redirected to the NetReg Page
4- Pass the scan
5- Enter your NetID or email address (explained below)
6- Reboot You can register as a permanent user with your NetID, or as a guest user with your email address. Permanent: If you have a NetID you will be able to register using this account. This will enter you into the database until the database is purged. Guest: If you do not have a NetID you will need to register as a guest. Guest access allows you the same amount of access as permanent access, but on a temporary basis. Guests are allowed 14 days of access before they are removed from the system.
